California is often exported as a small set of images: palms, freeways, beaches, fame, sunshine. Those images are real, but they are not the whole state. California is also river country, border country, farm country, mountain towns, suburbs, ports, reservations, capital corridors, inland heat, coastal fog, and neighborhoods where several languages share one block.
“California is not a filter. It is many simultaneous ideas of home.”
A group built here should not merely wear California as a filter. Its members can bring different relationships to the state: newly arrived, generations deep, displaced, rooted, priced out, returned, or still deciding whether this is home. Those differences will affect sound, humor, movement, and the stories worth telling.
Sacramento is especially useful because it sits outside the most familiar entertainment mythology while connecting river, Delta, government, agriculture, migration, and the Pacific. I do not see that distance from Los Angeles as a deficit. It gives Hidden Tide another center from which to imagine scale.
