← The Making of Hidden Tide

The demon has an inner voice

Fantasy became intimate when the monsters outside the group echoed the shame carried inside it.

A supernatural threat can provide scale, danger, and spectacular action. It becomes memorable when it also names something human. In KPop Demon Hunters, the demonic world is tied to the voice that says a hidden part of you makes you unworthy of love. The battle is public; the wound is private.

“The battle is public; the wound is private.”

That connection allows children and adults to enter the same story from different depths. One viewer sees heroes defeat monsters. Another recognizes the exhausting labor of appearing perfect while fearing discovery. Neither reading cancels the other. Fantasy gives a difficult feeling a shape, a color, a sound, and finally an answer.

The story taking shape under the code name Exotica has its own waters full of bargains and appetites, but the creature cannot be interesting merely because it has teeth. I need to know what voice it amplifies inside the person who hears it. The best monster is not a substitute for human conflict. It is the pressure that makes the hidden conflict speak.
