The character
Meet Brine
Brine keeps dreams from becoming wreckage. A master of rope, weight, strain, and the moods of wood, she can feel a ship’s danger before anyone sees it. She is practical because she cares too much, physical because words arrive too late, and funny because fear is easier to carry when it laughs. Her bond with Mira is the anchor of the surface world.

Second watch · Wind turning westBrine
Mira has been in the rigging for twenty-three minutes. She thinks I do not count. I count everything: knots, breaths, boards between her boots and the black water.
People call her brave because she looks up. Nobody calls the hands below brave for holding the rope.
The line burned my wrist tonight. Good. Pain tells the truth before captains do.
