← The Making of Hidden Tide

Paid development is development

If we want a diverse ensemble, we must reduce the hidden costs that decide who can remain in the room long enough to grow.

Calls for diverse talent often focus on discovery, as though extraordinary artists are simply waiting to be found. Discovery is only the beginning. People need time to rehearse, travel, learn material, record, recover, and keep participating while rent and ordinary life continue.

“The budget is where the values become measurable.”

Unpaid development quietly selects for those who can subsidize the project themselves. That can erase the very range of class, geography, age, caregiving responsibility, and lived experience that an open audition promised to welcome. Stipends, travel support, transparent schedules, meals, accessible spaces, and realistic commitments are creative infrastructure.

Hidden Tide will have to grow at the pace its resources can support. I would rather build a smaller paid room than a larger room held together by invisible sacrifice. The budget is not separate from the values. It is where the values become measurable.
