← The Making of Hidden Tide

The final mile is human

AI can help an idea travel farther and faster. Only people can turn it into a shared experience.

Artificial intelligence can make a remarkable amount of material. It can help shape a melody, clarify a paragraph, picture a costume, or give an early idea enough form that another person can finally see what has been living in my head. That is a real benefit. It lowers the cost of beginning and lets a small project communicate before it has a large team or budget.

But more material is not the same thing as more connection. We can generate endless music, yet a concert becomes meaningful when a singer risks her voice and body in front of a room, musicians listen and respond to one another, and an audience changes the energy in real time. The same is true of a letter, a social post, or an unexpected conversation in a coffee shop or grocery store. What stays with us is not simply that something was produced. It is that another person was there.

“The idea should change because another human being entered the room.”

That human final mile is not an inefficiency waiting to be automated away. It is the meeting itself: interpretation, vulnerability, surprise, disagreement, trust, and the feeling of being recognized. A tool can imitate many of the forms through which connection travels. It cannot decide to stand beside us and share the consequence of what happens next.

For Hidden Tide, AI is not the destination and it is not a substitute for collaborators. We use it to carry an idea far enough that singers, dancers, musicians, actors, designers, historians, and producers can meet it sooner. Then we want them to question it, complicate it, and make it better. The idea should change because another human being entered the room.

That is the point of the project: not the volume of things we can generate, but the number and quality of relationships the work can create. If these tools help more people begin, more artists find one another, and more ambitious work rise from Sacramento, they have served something larger than efficiency. AI can help bring an idea to the water. People make the tide rise.
